My name is Alexa Young

A collaboration between the Girl Scouts and the League of Women Voters, Girl Scouts of all levels participate in an all day workshop focusing on civic engagement, advocacy and the voting process. They learn about the 19th Amendment and the history of the Women's Right To Vote; hear from local government representatives and other women actively engaged in the democratic process; hold a mock election; and discover ways to help make positive changes in their community. 

Each age level completes for a Citizenship badge including Behind the Ballot, Celebrating Community, Finding Common Ground and Inside Government.

Jockey Hollow Girl Scout Camp,  Mendham, NJ

80 Girl Scouts participated representing a diverse group from Union County, Morris County, Passaic County, and Bergen County. The event was organized by LWV Morris Area and the Girl Scouts of Northern NJ. 33 League members and 30 Girl Scout leaders taught workshops for 5 Girl Scout Civics badges. They held a mock voting exercise, a historical suffrage poster gallery walk, and a 19th amendment historical display.

 

Assemblywoman Aura Dunn (LD25), Councilwoman Judy Hernandez (Parsippany), and Morris County Clerk, Ann Grossi encouraged the girls to support women's leadership in government and to become leaders in government or in other ways as adults.

Voter Girl NJ began in 2019 with a pilot project in Chatham, NJ, hosted by LWV Morris Area with 150 Girl Scouts attending.

 

In 2020, the 100th Anniversary of both the League of Women Voters and the 19th Amendment Women's Right to Vote, NJ Voter Girl was held statewide. 500 Girl Scouts attended led by 150 LWV volunteers and Girl Scout leaders. Over 50 elected women officials spoke about their jobs.

 

In 2021, a COVID safe outdoor event was held in Kinnelon, NJ, in collaboration with the Girl Scouts of Northern NJ and several local Leagues led by LWV Morris Area.

In 2024, Voter Girl was held at Jockey Hollow Girl Scout Camp in Mendham NJ. 80 Girls Scouts from northern NJ participated led by 33 League members and 30 Girl Scout leaders. Three elected women government officials spoke about their jobs and encouraged the scouts to become leaders of the future.

This is a wonderful opportunity for girls and women of ALL ages to see women who are actively engage in making Democracy Work.
